How Vitamin D Affects your Body and Dental Health

This past year one of my patients, at our Madison, NJ office, had a small basel cell removed. Being fair she has always tried to protect her skin from the sun. The advice of her surgeon was to stay out of the sun. A recent routine blood test indicated that her Vitamin D level was deficient. It was interesting that all her medical doctors told her to avoid the sun but none, until the blood test, told her about supplementing her Vitamin D intake. As a dentist, we care about our patients overall health as well as their Dental Health.

Vitamin D’s health benefits have been in the news a lot lately. I took the time to understand the effects of Vitamin D on dental health. I want to share some information I have learned with all of my dental patients and more.

Many people understand that Calcium helps build strong bones ands teeth. However, most probably don’t know the relationship Vitamin D has with Calcium and your dental health. So, what does Vitamin D do for the body? Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb the calcium we need for optimal bone and teeth development. Without enough Vitamin D in childhood, bone deformities can develop. If we do not get enough in our adult life it can lead to reduced bone density, osteoporosis & increased risk of bone fractures.

The latest research suggests that Vitamin D plays a role in helping to prevent a variety of health conditions, including multiple sclerosis. It can also reduce the risk of breast cancer in women. So you are probably wondering, what about how it benefits your mouth? The importance of Vitamin D for your teeth is very significant and almost completely overlooked in the medical field. How often have you been told to take Vitamin D for the prevention of periodontal/gum disease and the formation of cavities? Probably not very often. Since we were kids we have heard about the importance of Calcium, but, the relationship of Vitamin D is just as important. For many of our patients, brushing regularly, flossing daily and seeing our dental hygienist twice a year hasn’t always stopped all of periodontal disease. As a dentist this is very discouraging.

When patients suffer from this disease they have a weakening of the bone that anchors teeth into their socket. This leads to redness, bleeding, inflammation (also known as gingivitis), which if untreated can eventually lead to loss of teeth. Vitamin D is also important because it acts as an anti-inflammatory. It is an important stimulator of our immune system. When your immune system health is at its best, you are less likely to get bacterial infections in your gums and elsewhere.

So how does it all work? Calcium is stored in bones and teeth. This stored nutrient is always in a state of movement. When the body needs more Calcium in the bloodstream due to low levels, the body extracts it from its storage in bones and teeth. When there is an abundance of Calcium in the bloodstream, it is put back into bones and teeth, thus making our skeleton very strong and resilient. Vitamin D acts as the regulator of this whole process. When Vitamin D levels are too low, no Calcium is put back into bones and teeth. Then our bones become weakened and susceptible to fractures. Low levels of Vitamin D can be a contributing factor to osteoporosis and periodontal disease.

To sum it up, Calcium and Vitamin D are critical for the general health and strength of bones and teeth. With the avoidance of sun exposure many people are becoming Vitamin D deficient. In the case of my patient, once skin cancer was detected, and the recommendation to stay out of the sun was made, the importance of supplementing Vitamin D was not suggested.
It is very important to make sure we get enough Vitamin D in our diet and from supplements. It is recommended to take 1,000 IU of Vitamin D daily for adults and 400 IU for children. Eating foods high in Vitamin D is also helpful. Such foods include milk, yogurt, salmon, orange juice, tuna, eggs, and cheese.

Madison, NJ Dentist Now Using Salivary DNA Tests to Fight Periodontal Infections

Madison, New Jersey-October, 24, 2011 – Madison dentist Dr. Sam Romano, whose practice is located at 120 Park Ave, is now administering two molecular tests that provide supplemental information about a patient’s periodontal disease. This information can be used to develop patient-specific treatment plans for periodontal disease therapy and to help establish the therapy endpoint.

The two salivary diagnostic tests, named MyPerioPath® and MyPerioID® PST®, are offered by OralDNA® Labs Inc., a subsidiary of Quest Diagnostics.

Specifically, the MyPerioPath test provides semi-quantitative levels of 11 different species of bacteria known to trigger periodontal disease. In addition to identifying the bacterial pathogens, the test provides a bacterial-related risk of disease progression and suggestions for suitable antibiotic therapy. The MyPerioID PST test detects genetic changes (DNA polymorphisms) that have been associated with increased incidence and/or progression of chronic periodontal disease in some studies.

According to Dr. Sam Romano, “We are very pleased to be one of the first dental practices in the area to utilize the MyPerioPath and MyPerioID PST salivary diagnostic tests, enhancing our ability to provide the best possible care.”

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and other structures supporting the teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. Besides helping with tooth retention, successful periodontal treatment can help patients with diabetes to better control their disease.1,2 About 50% of Americans have gingival bleeding, the more common but less severe form of periodontal disease.3 Prevalence of more severe disease is more difficult to ascertain.

Several research studies have associated gum disease with other chronic inflammatory
diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.4,5

Sedation Dentistry can be for patients who are anxious about seeing the dentist

Sedation Dentistry is a service for patients who are anxious about their dental procedures, or have the common apprehension known as dental phobia. All too often patients are putting off getting the dental care they need due to panic and stress about seeing the dentist.
Today, however, patients can undergo sedation and actually sleep through their procedure, waking up to a new beautiful smile without enduring the nerves and anxiety they may have previously had. Sedation can be administered through the use of traditional modalities of inhalation (nitrous oxide or “laughing gas”) and IVs, such as those offering a “no needle” approach that many people find more appealing and less painful.

One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken two hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as smile makeovers or extensive rebuilding procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.

If you are reluctant to change the appearance of your smile because you are afraid or anxious about undergoing long or complicated dental procedures, sleep dentistry can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.

Dr Sam Romano is a dentist in Madison, NJ providing sedation dentistry for patients with a fear of the dentist, have a strong gag reflex, or simply do not like the sound of drills or painful needles.

CEREC Techology

Chairside Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or CEREC technology can provide you with any number of porcelain restorations in minutes and reduces patient time spent in the dentist chair.
Currently patients who have fillings made of metal or other harsh material often feel uncomfortable smiling because the filling doesn’t match the color of the rest of their teeth. CEREC provides patients with the option of having your next dental restoration permanently corrected in just one visit to the dentist.

During a CEREC dental restoration, the patients teeth are examined to determine what treatment will best provide their needs and desires. If a CEREC restoration is recommended, the patients tooth is prepared for restoration and an optical impression of your tooth will be made. This high-resolution optical impression will be used to create a ceramic restoration that perfectly fits your tooth and matches the rest of your teeth.

In about 15 minutes, the CEREC milling machine will sculpt your ceramic restoration from a block of porcelain. Once the restoration has been tested for proper fit and so that it does not interfere with your bite, it is permanently bonded to the patients tooth. The end result is a ceramic restoration that looks and feels just like your natural teeth.

CEREC technology can be used to create:
