We love our children and want the very best for them. At our Madison NJ based Family Dental Office, my team and I are committed to providing the best possible dental experience for your children. Being a parent myself, I know how important it is to make every dental visit pleasant starting at an early age. For many adults dental anxiety stems from early dental experiences. We feel it is important for children to feel safe and at ease in the dental office. When children are younger and keeping good care of their teeth through preventative dentistry , they have no preconceived fear of the dentist. My staff and I are experienced in children’s dentistry and we look forward to creating raving fans. Hearing children laughing in the office is a great day for our staff.
Development of Teeth in Children
There is always a sense of excitement when baby teeth first start to cut through. There are also typically a lot of questions that evolve after the first tooth starts to appear. How do you care for your child’s teeth? What can you expect to be happening and changing over their developmental years?
The first baby teeth to come into the mouth are the bottom two front teeth. You will notice this when your baby is about 6-8 months old. Next, the 4 upper front teeth will begin to appear followed by the remainder of their baby teeth on a more periodic basis. The teeth will usually begin to appear in pairs along the sides of the jaw until the child is about 2 ½ years old . At about 2 ½ years old your child should have all 20 teeth! Between the ages of 5 and 6 the first permanent teeth will begin to erupt. Some of the permanent teeth replace baby teeth and some don’t. Don’t worry if some teeth are a few months early or late as all children are different. Baby teeth are important as they not only hold space for permanent teeth, but also are important for chewing, biting, speech, and appearance.
Tooth Decay in Children
Dental Caries – known as cavities , occur when bacteria in the mouth breaks down sugars from food into acid. The acid breaks down or decays the surface of teeth. As soon as your child’s first teeth appear they are at risk for decay. Often by the time the dental decay is noticed by parents, the decay process has already been going on for several months if not longer. If dental caries remain untreated, the infectious process can spread, causing more health problems for your child. In addition, decay on the primary teeth (baby teeth) can put the permanent teeth at risk.
